Please share your ideas with each other. Try to give FEEDBACK. This is a place for YOU to collaborate with each other:)

If you choose to do this at home, please TYPE your response (one page, double spaced).  You may consult the link provided to you on Progress Book to get more information on writing a coming of age novel.

  1. Hey everyone,

I'm posting about the format of the letter. You can choose to do a business letter format (word has a template for that, also in Writer's Inc) or a letter to an author (look in Writer's Inc for format) if length is an issue (remember: one page, double spaced). Since it is a letter, it is appropriate to use I voice.

  4. Just to clarify, we are writing to the editor but we can use the format in Writers Inc of a letter to an author on pg. 235. Also, Mrs. Edwards said if we go a little over on the length that's fine.

  5. So Mrs. Edwards said that the letter should be a letter to the editor not a letter to the author

  6. Mrs. Edwards just called and told me what to post so here is what she said:
You can use the letter to the author format in writer's inc but you are writing to an editor. Also, because of the double spacing, she said you can go a little bit over a page but not too much.
    Hope this helps everyone

  8. AP Concept Focus: Coming of Age Novel
“A coming of age novel is the story of a person’s transition from one life-stage to the next. It is a tale of growth, wisdom, insight, and ways in which the protagonist develops a mature and conscious understanding of self” (Letham).
You are a new novelist! You are proposing an idea for your first novel, a coming of age tale that satirizes some aspect of society, utilizing the viewpoint of an “innocent.”
Incorporate two of the following aspects into a book proposal for your coming of age novel:
    • Life transitions
    • Traditions
    • Prejudices/Injustices
Directions: Write this in letter form. The letter should be succinct, respecting the time of the busy editor that will read your proposal. Use language appropriate to this circumstance. I would like for you to use a five paragraph structure.
Paragraph one: Catch your reader’s attention! Address the need for this novel! Summarize the plot of the novel.
Paragraph two: Describe what aspect of society that you will be satirizing, including the intended change that will happen as a result of this humorous approach.
Paragraph three: Describe your protagonist. How will your audience engage with this protagonist? What aspects of this character are universal?
Paragraph four: Describe the setting. How is the setting pivotal to the success of this satirical coming of age novel?
Paragraph five: Thank the author, but also convey to him/her how YOU are the only person with the insight and knowledge base to successfully deliver this product.

  9. My essay is a page and a half double spaced. Do you think that's alright? I already shortened it three lines and I cannot find anything else to cut.

  10. Skylar. That is fine:) It is double spaced (to accommodate my OLD eyes) and could be a little longer.

  12. Emily. If you have Word, you can adapt the business letter format. The main thing that I want is the personal voice that a letter form demands. I DON'T want a formal essay. You are proposing an idea...use that voice. I am not deducting for letter form; this is appropriate due to the fact that it is still "technically" an in class writing prompt;) Does that help?
